Your Radio Can Tell Winlink Your GPS Location

Well, some radios.

This last week two of our members used an other-than-the-usb-puck or dongle to access their GPS location.

Michael, KQ7MLT used his Yaesu handheld FT5DR to access GPS. See the article near the end of the Training Page.

Rick, K7RDB is currently using an older GPS device to access his GPS location.

I found out two things. One, you can insert your dongle, then turn on Winlink Express (WLE), go to the GPS section, acquire your GPS location which turns your cross icon green. Then you can remove the dongle and WLE will retain the green status.

Two, when you look at your posted but un-sent message, it will indicate your location (Grid Square, Specified, or GPS) IF you have toggled ON that feature. If you post the message whilst your position icon is RED, your reported position will likely be listed as Grid Square or Specified (depending on your previous actions). You can go back, acquire a GPS location (get green), then EDIT your message and simply re-post the message. You now should have “GPS” listed in your message.
